Chartered Physiotherapy can help some Vertigo, Dizziness and loss of balance. This condition is known as Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo or BPPV.
BPPV can be caused by little particles dislodging from their base in the inner ear and moving freely in the canals of the inner ear. This movement upsets the balance system of the body and gives you the unpleasant sensation of the room spinning around you. It can occur particularly when you lie down or turn over onto one side. In severe cases it can cause vomiting.
The aim of the treatment is to reposition the particles in the canals in the inner ear, back into their base. This is done by a specialised manoeuvre of rotating the head, which uses gravity to roll the particles back along the canal to their base.
If you have had several bouts of BPPV, you might find that your balance isn’t as good as it should be. This can be a cause of falling, especially in the older person. Simple exercises involving the eyes can be taught by a Chartered Physiotherapist with an interest in this area. Assessment of someone with affected balance will also include other parts of the body which may also be giving rise to the problem.
